Middle School Classroom Overview

(grades 7-8)

The Montessori "Erdkinder" (Children of the land) philosophy focuses on teaching students practical-life skills while simultaneously providing them with opportunities for increased independence. Esprit attempts to meet the needs of adolescents by providing them with a wide array of educational and extra-curricular activities. The middle school program provides students with a framework from which they have the opportunity to pursue personal interests. Students are often asked to choose from a list of multiple assignments. This meets the needs of a diverse group of learners by allowing them to pursue topics and project styles that more closely align with their unique learning styles.

Daily Schedule

Each morning begins with a community meeting which consists of sharing personal stories, acknowledging each other, participating in a short challenge, reviewing any important information for the week and simply learning how to listen and appropriately respond to one another.

Teachers generally give group lessons early in the week and follow-up independently or with small groups throughout the week.

Students are asked to plan their week in advance to ensure the best use of their class time. History or science group projects are presented every Friday. In addition to the standard schedule, students meet twice weekly for a teacher-led foreign language immersion.

Expectations

Students who are able to meet the expectations for the middle school program have the requisite skills that not only allow them to be successful in high school but also provide them with the foundation to be successful in college and beyond. The middle school program can be viewed as the bridge between the elementary years and young adulthood. Students who fully embrace the program and its expectations are able to pursue their future educational opportunities with greater ease and success.

Rigor

While students are able to take an active role in the direction of their studies at Esprit, they must meet high expectations. Students read approximately 6-8 novels for Language Arts each year which also include multiple literature discussions each week. Reading and writing are at the core of the program so students complete essays of various lengths and styles on a routine basis. In addition to their standard weekly work, students are asked to complete multi-week personal projects for science and history during each 6-week cycle.

Class Trip

Students in the middle school program at Esprit are asked to create small businesses in order to earn money for an end of the year trip. This trip is entirely student planned and implemented. While the students enjoy the independence and freedom that comes with planning a class trip, they also learn valuable lessons along the way that help them to develop into more mature students and young adults.
